HOW THE E-MAIL QUERY IS CHANGING PUBLISHING
Using E-Mails to Contact Editors, Agents, and the Press: The New Way for the Individual to Get Heard
At one time, a new book author had to find an agent and depend on that agent to sell their book. Authors also had to depend on their publisher’s publicists or hire a press agent to promote their book. Now through the use of e-mails, writers with a good story can pitch it themselves in a powerful, compelling way and get heard by most editors and agents. An e-mail query will get them through the gate. Plus now writers and others with a story to tell have help from an e-mail query service, www.PublishersandAgents.net, which is becoming an umbrella for connecting all types of writers with all types of editors and publishers, as well as agents and the press. The company started with linking book writers to publishers and agents and has expanded to connect screenplay writers with producers, production companies, and agents. Next it will be connecting writers and anyone with a story to tell to newspaper editors and the TV/radio media through e-mails. Even a year or six months ago, using e-mail queries in this way was not possible, because only a small percentage of people in the industry were on line – and most editors and agents still wanted queries submitted in the usual way. But today almost everyone is on line, and publishing, like the media, has become a send it to me now business. So new writers are able to break in as never before, as long as they have a powerful story and strong pitch letter to get them through the door. For example, one woman with an agent pitching her story about how her daughter was murdered by her ex-husband – She Died for Her Kids – wasn’t able to attract any interest to her story, even with her agent contacting dozens of editors and film producers. But after she sent out an e-mail query, she got four dozen replies in a day, and a dozen publishers are now considering her story. Another woman with a compelling story -- My Name Isn’t Maria -- about an escape from a Communist country only to be exploited and abused by her step-brother posting as her husband had a similar experience with an agent. But after an e-mail query, she now has seven publishers interested in publishing her book. The service was started by Gini Graham Scott, Ph.D., J.D., after she started developing her own lists of publishers to market her own books – now over 35 of them – and then went digital in 2002. For more details on how this approach works, visit www.publishersandagents.net or the new site being set up at www.screenplaywritersconnection.com. You’ll see some articles about using this approach successfully, along with comments from previous clients and people in the industry. # # # # # #
